Reduction of 'opposition period' for UK Trade Marks
Following recent changes to the Trade Mark Rules, the opposition period following publication of a trade mark in the Trade Marks Journal has been reduced.
Previously, applications were open to opposition for a fixed period of three months. However, as in excess of 90% of trade marks faced no opposition, the UK Intellectual Property Office has changed this period to two months. This is good news, as the change will speed up registration of the majority of trade marks by one month.
Please note that the period may be extended free of charge by a further one month by anyone considering opposition, provided that they file a Notice of Threatened Opposition prior to expiry of the two month opposition period.
